We Are One Nation!
Karen and Jay share thoughts on the critical importance of unity and civility at this pivotal moment in our nation’s history.
As Americans, we find ourselves at a critical juncture – presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity to unite as a people, to transcend the bitterness and divisiveness we have recently experienced and to rise up as one – united, strong and confident in the bright future that lies ahead.
As I have often said, there is far more that unites us – than divides us. We believe in freedom, equality and justice for all. We hold dear the sanctity of the individual. We love our families and communities. In short, we believe that each and every individual should have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream – to be the best we can possibly be – to achieve our full potential.
In fact, the entire Sunshine Initiative – and now our American Sunshine Movement – is based on this core belief. That we have abundant opportunity, that what we can achieve has no bounds – and we are limited only by our ability to believe. Believing that positive energy, inspires positive change, resulting in positive results.
Looking towards the future with optimism and a united front opens the door to endless possibilities and opportunities for growth. By focusing on common goals and shared aspirations, we as Americans can work together to tackle pressing challenges and lead the way in creating a brighter, more prosperous future for generations to come. As individuals set aside differences and come together for the greater good, the potential for positive change becomes limitless.
So, especially given the events of the past several years and even the past week, let’s commit ourselves to a united, positive path ahead. And let’s be inspired by the words of Thomas Jefferson – that as Americans, we believe that each and every one of us should have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In short, to achieve the American Dream!
Unity, NH: A Beacon of Hope Amidst Political Turmoil
In the small town of Unity, New Hampshire, the name itself carries a profound significance in today's politically charged climate. Unity, with a population of just over 1600 people is nestled in Sullivan County – right next to Newport where I grew up - and symbolizes the aspirational ideal of bringing people together despite their differences.
Interestingly, this small town has often found itself in the broader narrative of national politics, particularly during pivotal moments such as the Obama-Clinton rally in 2008 and the Clinton-Gingrich debate in nearby Claremont. These events, infused with calls for solidarity and cooperation, starkly contrast with the current state of political polarization and divisiveness in the United States – and have also served as an opportunity for the town of Unity to lead the way in actually encouraging ‘unity’ in our political discourse.
In June 2008, then-Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton stood side by side in Unity after a fiercely contested primary season. The rally marked the end of their rivalry and the beginning of a united front aimed at securing a Democratic victory in the presidential election. This moment of unity in Unity served as a powerful symbol of reconciliation and cooperation, showcasing how former adversaries could join forces for the greater good. Similarly, in 1995, President Bill Clinton and Speaker Newt Gingrich shared a stage in Claremont, NH, engaging in a dialogue that, despite their differences, underscored the importance of bipartisan efforts to address the nation's challenges.
However, the spirit of Unity and the collaborative ethos demonstrated in these historical events stand in stark contrast to the current political landscape. The country is grappling with unprecedented levels of polarization. The recent shocking event where former President Trump was shot has only deepened the divisions, highlighting the urgent need for a return to civility and constructive discourse. This incident serves as a stark reminder of how far the nation has strayed from the ideals embodied by the town of Unity.
The polarization is not just a political issue but a societal one, affecting communities and relationships at all levels. The increasing tendency to view those with differing opinions as enemies rather than fellow citizens has eroded the foundational principles of democracy. In contrast, the events in Unity and Claremont remind us that progress is possible when leaders and citizens alike prioritize common ground over conflict.
As the nation reflects on these historical moments of unity, there is an urgent call for a collective recommitment to the values of cooperation and mutual respect. Unity, NH, stands as a symbol of what the country can achieve when it embraces these values. It is a reminder that despite the current climate of divisiveness, the potential for reconciliation and progress remains within reach if we choose to prioritize unity over division.
Unity, New Hampshire, offers a poignant lesson for today's America. The town's history of political cooperation serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating that unity is not just a name but a principle that can guide the nation towards a more harmonious and prosperous future. As the country navigates through these turbulent times, the spirit of Unity can inspire a renewed commitment to bridging divides and working together for the common good.
Bridging Divides: ‘NH Together's’ Effort to Unify Politics
In an era of political polarization, here is a proactive, positive ‘breath of fresh air.’ A group based in Claremont, New Hampshire, called NH Together, recently embarked on a mission to discover how people across the political spectrum could come together. This effort culminated in a weekend Citizens Assembly held at Saint Anselm’s NH Institute of Politics in Manchester. Fifty individuals, representing a broad cross-section of the state’s demographics, engaged in intense discussions and activities designed to foster deep connections and mutual understanding.
Participants spent the weekend learning from nonpartisan experts about New Hampshire’s voting and election processes. Speakers such as Secretary of State David Scanlan and Citizens Count’s Anna Brown provided valuable insights. The event was meticulously planned and facilitated by NH Together's senior advisor Zabrae Valentine, with support from various experts and organizations like The People, NH Listens, and the Sunshine Initiative. The collaborative nature of the event was evident, with Advisory Council members such as Brian Hettrick, Charlie Wheelan, and James McKim working alongside facilitators to ensure a productive and inclusive experience.
The assembly divided into eight breakout groups to develop policy proposals, which were then voted on by all delegates. The result was a set of four major recommendations that received overwhelming support: establishing an independent redistricting commission, improving voter education, instituting a “single ballot” primary, and enhancing civics education for students. These proposals, each endorsed by over 80% of the delegates, reflect a collective effort to create a more transparent and inclusive electoral process.
The success of the Citizens Assembly is a powerful example of how unity and collaboration can lead to meaningful political reforms. The diverse group of New Hampshire citizens demonstrated that, despite differing views, it is possible to find common ground and work towards a shared goal. This initiative not only provided solutions to pressing political issues but also inspired hope for the future of democracy. As New Hampshire leads this effort, the long-term goal is to expand this model nationally, promoting integrity, involvement, and civility in political discourse.
Looking ahead, the next step involves transforming these policy proposals into actionable legislation. A legislative drafting committee, comprising assembly delegates and bipartisan legislators, will work over the summer to prepare for the upcoming session of the New Hampshire General Court. For those interested in supporting this cause, participating in webinars and engaging in civil conversations about real problems can make a significant impact. Resources and contacts, such as Martha Madsen of The People at martha@thepeople.org, are available for those eager to contribute to this ongoing effort.
Jon Morton and Brian Hettrick, both of the Sunshine Initiative, assisted in the weekend event. Their comments affirmed what came out in the press release, especially that of the ability for people from very different backgrounds and political points of view to come together and discuss somewhat controversial subjects - and most importantly reach agreement on them. And they credit the intensive planning and year-long effort of NH Together going into and talking and listening to communities across NH with helping ensure the overall success of the weekend.
Profile of the Week - Police Officer Kyle Daly - Mr. Community!
This week we are delighted to highlight a wonderful friend and leader in our community – Kyle Daly.
Kyle is a Manchester, NH police officer and is well-known not only for his commitment to law enforcement but also for his significant involvement in the community. In particular, Kyle’s passion for hockey has been a driving force in his community engagement, where he uses the sport as a platform to connect with residents and support charitable causes.
One of the most notable events Officer Daly participates in is the annual CHaD Battle of the Badges hockey game. This event pits police officers against firefighters in a friendly yet competitive hockey match, with the primary goal of raising funds for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD). The game is a significant event for the community, drawing large crowds and fostering a sense of camaraderie and support. Through his participation, Officer Daly demonstrates his dedication to helping those in need, as proceeds from the event directly benefit children receiving care at CHaD. This hockey game not only highlights the athletic talents of local first responders but also showcases their commitment to community service and charitable efforts. Officer Daly and his player buddy have shattered records being the first player to raise over $100,000 in just 5 years. But this is just the tip of the iceberg of Kyle’s participation in programs to unify and bring our community together.
The Manchester Police Patrolman’s Association (MPPA) is another crucial component of the local police force’s community involvement. Kyle proudly serves as the President. The MPPA is deeply committed to supporting various charities and initiatives within Manchester. They organize and participate in numerous events throughout the year, providing financial assistance and raising awareness for causes such as cancer research, youth programs, and support for families in need. The association’s efforts ensure that the police force is seen not just as law enforcers but as active and caring members of the community. One of the recent partnerships Kyle and MPPA have been involved with is the Billy Pappas Memorial Football camp. You see and as we noted,
Kyle wears many hats. Kyle is a Board Member of the Elliot Perry Foundation, a group he helped launch with his CHaD Player Buddy Elliot. Another Elliot Perry Foundation Board Member organized a free football camp for kids of Greater Manchester. Kyle and the MPPA have helped underwrite this event in the Queen City that not only provides a great experience for kids but also recognizes and honors the legacy of New Hampshire sports legend Billy Pappas. You would think that's a full plate for Kyle but it's not.
Kyle is part of the traffic division within the Manchester Police Department. One thing Kyle participates in and provides services to are the escorts of Charity and Memorial Motorcycle rides. A few years back a friend of both Karen and my family who had been a steadfast advocate for our causes passed away unexpectedly. This individual was a member of the legion’s motorcycle club. Kyle, who also knew this individual and the great things his club does in the community, stepped up to provide a police escort for his funeral procession. It was a fitting tribute to this veteran and only made possible due to Officer Daly’s big heart.
Police officers, like Officer Daly, are known for their dedication both on and off duty. Their involvement in community activities, whether through sports, charity events, or educational programs, helps to build trust and foster positive relationships with residents. This ongoing engagement ensures that the police are approachable and supportive, reinforcing their role as protectors and helpers in the community.
We owe a special debt of gratitude to Officer Daly and all those police officers who help this great community of ours whether in or out of uniform!
