Leadership in the Community

One Person Making a Difference!

Karen and Jay share the excitement as individuals step up as leaders making a positive impact in their communities.

It starts with a spark. An idea pops into your head. You want to do something good for your community. The idea begins to percolate. You tell a friend or family member about what you are thinking. Wondering whether it might even be possible. The truth is you don’t really know how to make it happen. Nonetheless, the idea begins to grow on you. And one day, out of the clear blue – you just take the first step and begin to make it happen. You’re inspired, you do more, you take another step. People start to take notice. They join in. And all of a sudden – you’ve got a movement! And somehow you have become the leader.

This is the magic of community leadership – and essentially, how so often it happens. Taking an active interest in one’s community is essential not only for fostering a sense of belonging but also for driving impactful change. When regular citizens step up, they bring unique perspectives and ideas that may not have been considered by established leaders or organizations. This grassroots involvement encourages a vibrant democratic process, where everyone’s voice matters, regardless of their background or experience. It shows that anyone, with enough determination and vision, can influence their surroundings positively, leading to enhanced community cohesion and resilience.

One inspiring example of this phenomenon that you may be familiar with is the story of the “Ice Bucket Challenge” for ALS awareness. What started as a simple social media challenge became an international movement, led by everyday individuals motivated to draw attention to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Participants, often without any prior knowledge of the disease, volunteered to get soaked in ice water to encourage donations and raise awareness. This initiative sparked a surge of funding, leading to advancements in research and a global conversation about ALS. It illustrates how an inspired individual can mobilize masses and effect change, irrespective of professional affiliation.

Another powerful instance is the community-led efforts following the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti. While numerous organizations rushed in with aid, countless ordinary citizens around the world used their platforms to collect funds, organize supplies, and raise awareness about the plight of the Haitian people. This grassroots initiative helped bridge gaps in the immediate humanitarian response, demonstrating that civic engagement is not solely the responsibility of trained professionals. Enthusiastic individuals leveraged their abilities to mobilize others, resulting in significant contributions to recovery efforts, showcasing the profound impact of community-driven initiatives.

Similarly, the establishment of community gardens in small towns as well as urban areas demonstrates how individuals can transform their neighborhoods through creative and sustainable solutions. For example, even in a highly urbanized city like Detroit, residents have turned vacant lots into lush gardens, bringing fresh produce to food deserts while fostering communal bonds. These efforts often start with just a few people who are passionate

about improving their environment and promoting healthy living.

The importance of regular citizens taking an active interest in their communities cannot be overstated. In fact, it’s the essence of the American spirit of volunteerism. Initiatives sparked by individuals who find inspiration can lead to meaningful change, even in the absence of formal leadership experience. So, whatever the idea that inspires you, I encourage you to take the next step – put energy behind your initiative and become a true leader in your community!

Terance Mann – Creating Opportunity for the Community

The story of Terance Mann is inspirational.  A young man who grew up just across the Massachusetts border in Lowell, played high school basketball in New Hampshire at the Tilton School, then Florida State, and now, since 2019, has played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers.  A strong trajectory of personal and athletic success – but a leader with a deep desire to ‘give back,’ to give inspiration and opportunity to others – and help the community.

Along with the support of his brother, Martin and his mother, Daynia LaForce, a highly accomplished college basketball coach herself, the Terance Mann Complete Player Foundation was established – with a commitment to increasing opportunities for students by providing access to sports and academics.

The "No Limits Fashion Event," hosted by the Foundation (TMCPF), is scheduled for August 15, 2024, at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. This event features a unique shopping experience, a dazzling runway show with student designers from Lasell University, and a VIP after party. The showcase will highlight the work of three Lasell University fashion students, with one being selected to design a garment for Terance Mann to wear during the 2024-2025 NBA season. One of the amazing features of this great event is the Lasell University Fashion Program.  Please visit to learn more about the event and possibly attend: https://lowellauditorium.com/event/no-limits-fashion-event-hosted-by-the-terance-mann-complete-player-foundation/lowell-memorial-auditorium/

The Lasell University Fashion Program, known for its emphasis on innovation and creativity, will have its student designers featured prominently in the fashion show. Lasell University, located in Newton, Massachusetts, offers a robust fashion program that prepares students for successful careers in the fashion industry. Their involvement in the event underscores the institution's commitment to showcasing and supporting emerging designers. But let me take a step and tell you about the foundation itself.

The Terance Mann Complete Player Foundation focuses on empowering underrepresented youth by providing access to private and preparatory schooling, as well as the tools necessary to pursue their athletic and academic dreams. Mann, a Lowell native and Los Angeles Clippers guard, established the foundation to give back to his community by increasing opportunities in sports and education.

Events like the No Limits Fashion Event and foundations such as TMCPF are vital in small-town and small city America because they provide unique opportunities and resources that may not be otherwise available. These initiatives help foster local talent, create community engagement, and offer youth a platform to pursue their aspirations in both academics and athletics.

Organizations and events like these and local communities are vital and keys to having a successful community impact and making a difference in one’s life. Thanks, Terance for remembering where you came from and even more so your willingness to come back, give back and make it a better place!

The Milford Miracle - Grassroots Community Efforts

To view the video, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/Milford Miracle Microburst

In the aftermath of a devastating microburst that struck Milford on July 16th, leaving nine homes uninhabitable, the spirit of community and neighborly support shone brightly. Michael Facques, Cheryl Stuart-Vail, and Trisha Dion, who believe deeply in helping and serving others, sprang into action upon hearing about the extensive damage. Driving through neighborhoods, they witnessed fallen trees, damaged homes, and residents in dire need of assistance.

By simply posting pictures and a description of the devastation on their own social networks, the community responded in force, with churches, businesses, and individuals wanting to donate time and expertise to the recovery effort.

Using the town's social media and their own platforms, Trish, Michael, and other volunteers mobilized and secured donations of equipment such as tractors and chainsaws from individuals, local landscapers, businesses, and churches. They went door to door to identify those in need and coordinate assistance. This remarkable initiative, dubbed the "Milford Miracle" by Trish, saw an impressive turnout of volunteers who worked tirelessly over multiple days to aid their neighbors. Not a single person or animal was harmed, and even the chicken coops remained intact amidst the chaos.

A core group of about 150 volunteers dedicated their time over six days, with plans to continue through the weekend. The community's response was bolstered by contributions from fifteen local businesses. One significant challenge was finding a location to dump the collected brush for free. Chappell Farm, owned by Dean Chappell, stepped in to donate space, as well as excavators, dump trucks, and even provided a logging truck to assist with tree removal. Builder Stephen Gasper, who had recently undergone MCL surgery, used his excavator for major land clearing. Sam Stevens and his tractor were the first to lead in the tree removal efforts all over the community, followed by Michael Knowles and his crew, who worked for four days to clear and repair damaged houses and yards.

The estimated cost to clean up the debris would have been between $120,000 and $125,000, but the community's efforts saved families from bearing this burden alone. One family had already paid $12,000 for tree removal before learning about the volunteer efforts. Those who were helped often joined in the efforts themselves, exemplifying the spirit of paying it forward. Erik, one of the many impacted residents, was among those who volunteered after receiving assistance.

The grassroots movement thrived on social media platforms like Facebook, where Milford residents could request help. One woman, for instance, simply wanted enough space cleared in her backyard for her dog, and she was deeply grateful when volunteers cleaned her entire yard. The Souhegan Valley Outreach Team (SVOT) also played a vital role, not only in spreading the word but also by cooking burgers and hot dogs for the hardworking volunteers. This collective effort brought neighbors together, many meeting for the first time, strengthening community bonds.

As the cleanup efforts continue, the Milford Miracle stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites. For those still in need of assistance or looking to contribute, Trish Dion can be contacted at mrsdion@gmail.com . Michael reflected on the experience, stating, "It's an amazing example of a community coming together to help folks in need, many of whom had never met, and expecting nothing in return." The silver lining in this challenging time has been the newfound connections and the incredible demonstration of neighborly love and support.
